Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal Jailed: Afghan Asylum Seekers Sentenced for Rape of 15-Year-Old Girl in Leamington Park

A Sunny Afternoon Descent into Nightmare

The idyllic greenery of Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa, usually a sanctuary for families and dog walkers, became the backdrop for a harrowing crime that has shaken the community to its core. On May 10, a bright spring day, a 15-year-old girl’s innocence was brutally stolen in an act of calculated cruelty. The teenager was enjoying a day out with friends, chatting innocently as young people do, when they encountered two 17-year-old boys, Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal. What began as a casual conversation took a sinister turn when the pair lured the girl away for a walk, isolating her from safety before subjecting her to a horrific rape. The sheer betrayal of that moment—where a friendly interaction masked predatory intent—is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers that can lurk in even the most public of spaces.

Bravery Amidst Trauma and Swift Police Action

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, the young victim displayed immense courage. Despite the trauma she had just endured, she managed to flag down a member of the public, setting in motion a chain of events that would bring her attackers to justice. Her quick thinking earlier in the day, having taken photos on her phone, combined with tireless CCTV analysis by the police, allowed officers to identify and arrest Jahanzeb and Niazal with remarkable speed. The investigation revealed a disturbing truth confirmed later in court: the perpetrators were Afghan asylum seekers who had abused the hospitality of the community they had entered. The swift identification and charging of the two boys ensured that they could not harm anyone else, but it cannot undo the psychological scars left on a young girl who simply wanted to enjoy an afternoon in her town.

Unmasked and Behind Bars: Justice at Warwick Crown Court

Today, the gravity of their crimes was laid bare at Warwick Crown Court. In a significant move, the judge lifted reporting restrictions that had previously shielded the identities of the attackers due to their age, allowing the public to see the faces of Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal. Having admitted to the rape in youth court, the pair faced the consequences of their actions. Jahanzeb was sentenced to ten years and eight months, while Niazal received nine years and ten months. Both will begin their sentences in a Young Offenders’ Institution before being transferred to prison. Additionally, they have been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and given indefinite restraining orders. While the sentences are substantial, the community remains heartbroken for the 15-year-old girl whose life has been irrevocably altered by this senseless act of violence.
