The teenager was enjoying a day out with friends, chatting innocently as young people do, when they encountered two 17-year-old boys, Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal. The investigation revealed a disturbing truth confirmed later in court: the perpetrators were Afghan asylum seekers who had abused the hospitality of the community they had entered. In a significant move, the judge lifted reporting restrictions that had previously shielded the identities of the attackers due to their age, allowing the public to see the faces of Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal. Having admitted to the rape in youth court, the pair faced the consequences of their actions. Jahanzeb was sentenced to ten years and eight months, while Niazal received nine years and ten months. Both will begin their sentences in a Young Offenders’ Institution before being transferred to prison. Additionally, they have been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and given indefinite restraining orders.
